Superintendent’s Blog - February 14, 2023

QUESTION: There seems to be so much going on in the district right now. Where can parents find information about the important issues?

ANSWER: You are right. There are several important issues currently being discussed by our Board of Education. These issues include hiring a new superintendent, feasibility studies looking at the future of West High School and Highland High School, and a comprehensive population and boundary study of all district elementary schools.

The decisions made related to these topics can and will affect you and your student(s). We want you to know what is happening, and we want your feedback. Please watch for invitations to participate in public hearings and surveys, or you can submit your thoughts at any time through email. Here’s a list of where you can find the latest information.

Website – Our district website (www.slcschools.org) is the first place to look. We strive to keep the most important and most recent issues available on our homepage, with links to more pages with detailed information. The large pictures featured on our homepage will help guide you, and you can scroll down the page to the News and Events section, which will feature three news articles and provide links to more news and to our calendar.

The website can also be translated into different languages. When visiting our website, look for an icon that says “English” and features an American flag in the lower left corner of the your screen. Click on that icon and it will present a list of available languages. Click on a language and any text on our website will be translated into that language.

District Newsletter – The District Newsletter is published once a month. It is emailed to parents and posted in the News section of our website. The newsletter typically features a message from me, the superintendent, and several news articles or reminders about what is happening in the district.

Board Meeting Report – The Board Meeting Report covers important reports, discussions, and actions that take place at each Board of Education meeting. This report is published a couple of days after each Board meeting. It too is emailed to our parents and posted on the district website.

Social Media – The district’s social media accounts are a great way to see what is happening in the district. They feature news and photos about important issues and the fun things happening in our district and schools. Social media is also used extensively in the case of an emergency to share pertinent and timely information with you and our community. Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter

Email, Text, and Phone Calls – We use an app called SchoolMessenger to hep provide basic communications with parents. Through this app we can deliver phone calls, emails, and text messages. This system is used for many types of communications, from student absences to emergency communications. However, this system only works if we have the correct contact information for you. If you move or change phone numbers or email addresses, please contact the secretary at your school and ask them to update your contact information.

In addition to all of these communication channels, if you ever feel the need to contact me or someone else in the district or our schools, please feel free to send us an email. On the main navigation bar at the top of our website you will find a “Directory” link. You can click on that link and on the following page you can search up any employee by name. It will provide you an email link.

Thank you for your interest in and continued support of our district and schools. We appreciate all that you do, and we rely on your feedback to help make our most important decisions.
