Senators Mike Lee from Utah and Tommy Tuberville from Alabama have introduced a new legislative proposal aimed at abolishing the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The proposed bill, known as the Abolish the TSA Act, seeks to dissolve the federal agency and shift airport security functions to private companies, all under the supervision of a newly created Office of Aviation Security Oversight.

Senator Lee highlighted the issues with TSA by saying, “The TSA has not only intruded into the privacy and personal space of most Americans, it has also repeatedly failed tests to find weapons and explosives.” He further elaborated on the bill’s goal to “privatize security functions at American airports under the eye of an Office of Aviation Security Oversight, bringing this bureaucratic behemoth to a welcome end."

Senator Tuberville joined in the critique of the TSA, describing it as an "inefficient, bureaucratic mess that infringes on Americans' freedoms." He argued, "It’s a bloated agency—riddled with waste, fraud, and abuse of taxpayer dollars—that has led to unnecessary delays, invasive pat downs and bag checks, and frustration for travelers.” Tuberville emphasized the need for more efficient and effective security methods that align with the liberties and freedoms of American citizens.

The bill outlines a plan that requires action within 90 days of enactment. The Secretary of Homeland Security, in consultation with the Secretary of Transportation, would be tasked to submit a reorganization plan to Congress. This plan includes the establishment of the Office of Aviation Security Oversight within the FAA, transferring aviation security activities and equipment to private entities, and reallocating non-aviation security responsibilities to the Department of Transportation.

Moreover, the proposal insists that private security companies should operate without conducting warrantless searches and seizures. The continuation of the TSA is not to be included in the reorganization plan. Congress is to consider this plan through an expedited procedure, with compliance closely monitored by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) through regular reporting.
