The Utah women’s tennis team lost to Brigham Young University with a score of 4-2 in the opening round of the Big 12 Tournament on April 15 in Orlando, Florida.
This match was important as it marked the beginning of postseason play for both teams. The loss leaves Utah with an overall record of 15 wins and nine losses this season.
Utah started strong by winning the doubles point. Emma Kamper and Sara Akid secured a win at the No. 1 spot, while Kaila Barksdale and Emmie Moore clinched victory at No. 3 doubles, giving Utah an early advantage. However, BYU responded by winning four singles matches. Sara Akid provided one singles victory for Utah at No. 2, defeating Kendall Kovick in straight sets.
BYU earned singles wins at positions five, three, one, and six to secure their place in the next round of the tournament. On court four, Kaila Barksdale was engaged in a close match against Yu-Yun Chen; after splitting sets and leading early in the third set, their contest went unfinished once BYU clinched overall victory.
