Utah women’s tennis introduced volunteer assistant coach Megan Dorny in a feature released on May 15. Dorny has held several coaching roles with the program, including serving as head coach from 2002 to 2007.
The feature aims to give fans insight into Dorny’s personal background and coaching philosophy. She said she first chose Utah as a player because she appreciated the honesty and authenticity of her coach during recruitment. “I chose to coach at Utah because I loved my playing experience. I grew a lot as a player and as a person in college and I want to help others do the same,” Dorny said.
Dorny shared some of her common phrases used in coaching, such as “this is why we practice” and “this is why we’re here,” which she uses to remind players about the purpose of preparation for competition. She added, “I also say ‘can I get you anything?’ for obvious reasons but also so our players know that their coaches will support them and help them with anything they need during a match.” When asked about role models, Dorny said, “I look up to and admire all the coaches I’ve had over the years, including the women I coach with now… Passion is a quality I admire in people of all professions now.”
Dorny described herself as driven, dedicated, maybe even obsessive—and always tired—reflecting on her busy family life with six children and one grandson. She emphasized that Utah’s team culture is very process-oriented: “Each day we work and compete hard and intentionally and let results take care of themselves. Then we try and get a little better for tomorrow.” Her favorite hobbies outside tennis include running, reading, and supporting her children’s activities.
Fans are encouraged to follow Utah women’s tennis on social media platforms including Twitter (@UteWomensTennis), Instagram (@UtahWomensTennis), and Facebook (Facebook.com/Utahwomenstennis).
Dorny’s continued involvement brings experience both on court strategy and off court mentorship for student-athletes at Utah.
