The Utah women’s tennis team defeated Utah Tech 6-1 in a nonconference match on March 9, securing the doubles point and carrying that momentum into singles play to clinch the overall victory.
This win brings the Utes’ season record to 8-5, while they remain at 1-2 in Big 12 conference play. The result highlights the team’s performance outside of conference competition and provides momentum as they prepare for upcoming matches.
In doubles action, Utah claimed victories at both the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Kaila Barksdale and Emmie Moore won their match against Maya Inouye and Nutsa Tsintsadze with a score of 6-1, while Emma Valletta and Kamea Medora secured a decisive 6-0 win over Cameron Hendrix and Ilse Fernanda Elechiguerra. The No. 1 doubles match was left unfinished with Utah leading.
During singles play, Sara Akid led the Utes by defeating Mariana Zurita Berdecio 6-1, 6-0 at the top spot. Barksdale followed with a commanding win over Ana Gutierrez Sampere, finishing her match without dropping a game. Valletta also contributed with a straight-set victory against Inouye, while Dylan Lolofie overcame Tsintsadze on court four. Medora recovered from an initial set loss to defeat Hendrix in three sets at position five.
Looking ahead, Utah will return home for matches against West Virginia on March 12 and Cincinnati on March 14 before traveling to face Texas Tech on March 19.
