Utah women’s basketball head coach Gavin Petersen announced on April 15 the signing of freshman Emma Petrie, a forward from Queensland, Australia, to the team’s 2026-27 roster.
Petrie’s addition is seen as an important move for Utah’s program as it looks to strengthen its lineup with international talent. Her experience and skill set are expected to contribute both offensively and defensively.
“We are very excited to have Emma Petrie join our Utah family,” Petersen said. “Emma brings versatility, confidence and toughness in her game and we welcome that. Her perimeter play, as a stretch forward, comes with the ability to be an elite shooter and decision maker in our system. She comes from a distinguished basketball family back in Australia, and she knows what it takes to be successful at a high level.”
Petrie has played with Australia’s national team at major tournaments including the 2024 FIBA U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup and the 2022 FIBA U15 Women’s Oceania Championship. During the latter event, she helped her team win gold while averaging nearly six points and over three rebounds per game. She is also noted as a six-time Queensland state representative.
In addition to her international experience, Petrie played three seasons with NBL1 Women’s Gold Coast. In 2025 she averaged more than ten points per game along with nearly eight rebounds—including over five defensive boards—and shot above fifty percent from the field.
