The University of Utah men’s lacrosse team lost to the Virginia Cavaliers, 16-11, at Scott Stadium on March 21. The game saw both teams competing closely, with Utah leading after the first quarter but ultimately being outscored in the second half.
This matchup was significant as it ended Utah’s four-game winning streak and marked a shift in momentum for both teams. The Utes now hold a record of 5-3, while Virginia moves to 4-4.
During the game, both teams had similar numbers of total shots, with Virginia taking a slight lead in attempts and shots on goal. Utah excelled at clearing attempts but struggled on faceoffs, winning only nine out of thirty-one tries. Luke McNamara led Utah’s offense with five points from four goals and an assist. Will Overly achieved a career-high with four goals. Ryan Stines scored once and set a new program record for career points at 217.
Zachary White contributed four assists for Utah, while Ryan Sheppard led defensively with three caused turnovers. Colin Lenskold played the entire game as goalkeeper for the first time since last month’s Denver match and recorded a season-best thirteen saves along with eight ground balls.
The game began with strong defensive play from both sides before offenses took over in the second half. After leading early, Utah fell behind following several scoring runs by Virginia. Despite efforts from McNamara and Overly late in the game, Virginia maintained its lead until the end.
Looking ahead, Utah will return home to open ASUN Conference play against Bellarmine on March 28 at Ute Field. Admission will be free for all fans.
