The University of Utah softball team completed a sweep of the No. 21/22 Arizona State Sun Devils with an 11-6 victory on March 8 in Big 12 Conference action at Farrington Stadium in Tempe, Arizona.
This win marks Utah’s first sweep of a ranked opponent on the road since defeating No. 13 Oregon in three straight games in 2023. The victory also extends Utah’s winning streak to eleven games, matching a similar run from the previous year. The Utes now hold a record of 21-5 overall and are undefeated at 3-0 in conference play this season.
Utah started strong as Mia Gomez hit her second home run in as many days on the sixth pitch of the game. Kayla Lyon contributed with a double that drove in two runs, and Payton Crank added a two-run home run to cap off a five-run first inning for the Utes. In the second inning, Hailee White led off with a single, and Danika Wilson brought in another run with a sacrifice fly before Lyon and Gomez extended the lead to seven runs.
Arizona State responded with runs in the second and third innings, but Utah answered back in the fourth with additional hits from Lyon, Crank, and White, increasing their advantage to 11-3. Raci Miranda entered late to pitch two scoreless innings and secured her seventh win of the season, becoming the first Utah pitcher since Katie Donovan in 2017 to start a season at 7-0. The game concluded after six innings due to time constraints.
Utah scored a total of thirty-five runs over three games against Arizona State, their highest output over such a span since scoring thirty-six against Southern Utah in May of 1996.
Looking ahead, Utah will return home next week for three games against Abilene Christian University, beginning with a doubleheader scheduled for Wednesday at 1 p.m.
