Hailey Maestretti and Raci Miranda each delivered complete-game shutouts as the University of Utah softball team secured two wins on Saturday at Karl Brooks Field in St. George, Utah. The Utes defeated Southern Utah 4-0 and Utah State 11-0.
With these victories, Utah improved to a 16-5 record, marking their best start through 21 games since the 2023 season. The team has now recorded three consecutive shutouts for the first time since March 2023.
The win over Southern Utah also marked a career milestone for head coach Amy Hogue, who reached her 700th victory as a head coach. This achievement came just two days after she notched her 500th win as head coach at Utah.
“The middle and bottom of our lineup came alive today,” said coach Amy Hogue. “Overall, we were efficient on both sides of the ball, which paid off with two wins today.”
In the game against Southern Utah, Maestretti allowed only two hits and one walk while striking out four batters over seven innings. She retired the first nine batters and induced 15 ground-ball outs.
Utah’s offense took an early lead with Shonty Passi hitting a two-run home run in the second inning. Kayla Lyon added a two-run single in the fifth inning to extend the lead.
Against Utah State, most of Utah’s runs came during a nine-run second inning that included RBI singles from Hailee White and Danika Wilson, along with a three-run double by Emily Capobianco. Wilson later contributed another two-run single in the third inning.
Miranda pitched all five innings against Utah State, allowing three singles and no walks while striking out five. She is now 5-0 to start the season—the first Utah pitcher to do so since Sarah Ladd in 2023.
“It is no surprise to us to see Raci’s success,” said Hogue. “She has been putting in the work all year. It’s been great to see her be rewarded for the time she’s invested.”
Utah will conclude its series in St. George with a game against Utah Valley on Sunday morning at 10 a.m.
