The University of Utah softball team lost to the Kansas Jayhawks 7-5 in a Big 12 Conference matchup on March 20 at Arrocha Ballpark in Lawrence, Kansas.
The game was notable as Mia Gomez extended her on-base streak to 30 consecutive games, but Utah could not hold onto an early lead. The Utes now have a season record of 23 wins and seven losses.
Utah started strong with Gomez leading off the game with a single and later scoring on an infield hit by Shonty Passi. In the second inning, Danika Wilson drew a walk that forced in another run, followed by Kayla Lyon’s two-run single to center field. After another walk and a wild pitch, Wilson scored again, giving Utah a commanding 5-0 lead.
Kansas began their comeback in the fifth inning when Ella Boyer hit a three-run home run. In the sixth inning, Hailey Cripe delivered a grand slam that put the Jayhawks ahead for good. Utah was unable to score in the seventh inning as Kansas completed their comeback victory.
The teams are scheduled to play again on Saturday at 1 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time for the second game of their three-game series.
