The University of Utah softball team, ranked No. 25, lost 9-4 to the Abilene Christian Wildcats on March 12 at Dumke Family Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City.
The loss brings Utah’s record to 23-6. The Wildcats took an early lead by scoring two runs in the first inning with a single, a stolen base, an RBI triple, and a passed ball. In the second inning, Abilene Christian added four unearned runs after a two-out error was followed by three consecutive singles.
Utah responded in their half of the second inning by loading the bases with one out. Kennedy Proctor singled in two runs, but after Proctor passed Mia Gomez on the bases and Danika Wilson grounded out, Utah remained behind by four runs. The Wildcats extended their lead again in the third inning with two more unearned runs.
In the fourth inning, Mia Gomez hit an RBI single and another run scored on a fielder’s choice for Utah, making it 8-4. However, the Utes were unable to close the gap further for the remainder of the game.
Looking ahead, Utah will have a weekend off before traveling to face the Kansas Jayhawks in a three-game series starting March 20.
