The University of Utah baseball team achieved its third consecutive shutout on Sunday, defeating Grand Canyon 4-0 at Charlie Monfort Field at America First Ballpark. This marks the first time since at least 1987 that Utah has recorded three straight shutout victories. In February 1993, the team allowed only one run over a three-game stretch against Mesa State and UNLV.
Since last Monday’s game at Loyola Marymount, Utah pitchers have not allowed a run in 32 consecutive innings.
Starting pitcher Justin Abercrombie earned his first win of the season with five scoreless innings, giving up six hits and recording one strikeout. Dylan Gazaway entered in the sixth inning and completed the game for his first save of the year, striking out four batters. Together, Abercrombie and Gazaway did not allow any walks—an accomplishment not seen by the Utah pitching staff since 2024.
Utah’s offense produced ten hits from six different players. Jake Long led the lineup with a 3-for-4 performance, scoring three times and finishing just a triple short of hitting for the cycle. Jet Gilliam and Jack Kleveno each had multiple hits; Kleveno drove in two runs.
The Utes scored their first two runs during a two-out rally in the second inning after Kleveno doubled to bring home Long and Cal Miller. Defensive plays kept Grand Canyon off the scoreboard, including an inning-ending double play started by Daniel Arambula in the fifth.
Gazaway retired all twelve batters he faced after taking over in the sixth inning. In Utah’s half of the sixth, Gilliam singled to right field to drive in Long for another run. Long added a solo home run in the eighth inning, extending his hitting streak to eight games and reaching base safely for ten straight contests.
Utah is scheduled to conclude its four-game series against Grand Canyon on Monday at noon Mountain Time at America First Ballpark.
