The University of Utah men’s tennis team defeated Brigham Young University with a close 4-3 victory, securing its place in the Big 12 Tournament, according to an April 11 announcement.
The match was significant as it determined Utah’s qualification for the upcoming conference tournament. The rivalry game featured competitive doubles and singles matches that kept the outcome uncertain until the final set.
In doubles play, AJ Deem and Lorenzo Esquici gave Utah an early lead by winning their match against Caden Hasler and Hardy Owen with a score of 6-3. However, BYU’s Adam Chodur and Otto Schreiner evened things up by defeating Balthazar Huss and Dante Teramo, 6-4. The decisive doubles point went to BYU after TJ Wells and Tygen Goldammer edged out Emmett Potter and Simeon Terziev in a tiebreaker, finishing at 7-6(5).
Utah responded strongly in singles competition. Charles Frey quickly tied the overall score with straight-set wins over Redd Owen at No. 6 singles. Simeon Terziev continued Utah’s momentum with a two-set victory against Yubel Ubri at No. 3 singles, while Lorenzo Esquici came from behind to win his match against David Duong at No. 4 singles in another tiebreak finish.
BYU fought back as Adam Chodur won his match against Dante Teramo at No.1 singles after three sets, followed by Caden Hasler defeating Balthazar Huss at No.5 to tie the overall score again at three points each.
The deciding point came down to Emmett Potter for Utah facing Tygen Goldammer in the second position; Potter took the first set but dropped a close tiebreaker in the second before rallying for a third-set win that secured both his individual match and Utah’s team victory.
With this result, Utah advances to compete in Orlando, Florida for the Big 12 Tournament.
