The University of Utah men’s tennis team lost to the ninth-ranked Baylor Bears 4-1 on April 2 in Waco, Texas.
This match was important for Utah as it faced a highly ranked opponent on the road. The loss brings the Utes’ season record to 5-14.
Baylor took an early lead by winning the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. The top doubles match, featuring Balthazar Huss and Dante Teramo against Zsombor Velcz and Calvin Baierl, was left unfinished at a score of 6-5.
In singles play, Simeon Terziev gave Utah its only point by defeating Connor Van Schalkwyk in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 3 spot. Baylor secured wins in singles matches at positions five, four, and two to clinch the overall victory. Two other singles matches remained unfinished: Dante Teramo’s contest with Devin Badenhorst ended at 6-3, 4-6, 3-4; AJ Deem’s match against Calvin Baierl stopped at a score of 4-6, 6-6(5).
Utah will continue its Texas road trip by playing fifth-ranked TCU in Fort Worth on Saturday, April 4. The team is scheduled to return home for matches against Idaho on April 10 and rival BYU on April 12 for senior day.
