The Utah men’s basketball team was defeated by Arizona State University, 73-60, in a Big 12 conference game at Desert Financial Arena on Saturday. Utah now holds a season record of 10-19 overall and 2-14 in conference play.
Utah started the game with a strong offensive effort from Terrence Brown and Keanu Dawes, building an early 7-2 lead. Dawes continued to contribute, sparking a 7-0 run that included a dunk at the 15:51 mark. Seydou Traore added to the momentum with a steal and score, prompting an Arizona State timeout as Utah led 14-5 with just over 15 minutes left in the first half.
After the timeout, Arizona State responded with a 13-5 run over five minutes to take a one-point lead at 19-18. The Sun Devils extended their advantage and went into halftime ahead by ten points, leading Utah 34-24.
In the second half, Utah trailed by as many as thirteen points but narrowed the gap after Don McHenry hit a three-pointer assisted by Lucas Langarita—who returned from injury—to cap off a 9-0 run. This brought Utah within four points at 43-39 with just over thirteen minutes remaining.
Arizona State then rebuilt its lead to double digits before another Utah surge, highlighted by Dawes scoring five points during a 7-0 run that cut ASU’s lead to six points. However, Arizona State maintained control for the remainder of the game and secured the win.
Dawes led all Utah scorers with sixteen points along with four rebounds and two assists. McHenry also scored in double figures with fourteen points.
Utah outrebounded Arizona State by four (35-31), including nearly doubling ASU’s offensive rebounds (13 to 7). The Utes also had more fast break points than their opponent (14 to 9).
Utah will return home for its final home game of the season against Colorado on Tuesday, March 3 at Jon M. Huntsman Center. Chris Sylvester will provide commentary alongside former assistant coach Joe Cravens on ESPN+ starting at 7 p.m. MST.
