The Utah men’s golf team finished the first round of the 46th annual Schenkel Invitational in a tie for second place on March 13, posting a team score of 7-under-par 281 at Forest Heights Country Club. The Utes share the position with Yale among a field of 15 teams, trailing Georgia Southern by three strokes.
This result puts Utah in a strong position as they aim to defend their title from last year. The tournament spans three days and consists of 54 holes, concluding on Sunday, March 15.
Sergio Jimenez and Brandon Robison led Utah with rounds of 5-under-par 67. Jimenez made three birdies late on the front nine and continued his bogey-free play on the back nine, finishing in a four-way tie for third place individually. Robison also shot a bogey-free round, matching his lowest score of the season and joining Jimenez in third place individually.
Other contributors included Gabriel Palacios with a score of 1-over-par 73, Jack Jerge at 2-over-par 74, and Davis Johnson at 3-over-par 75. Kade McDonough, competing as an individual, posted a score of 1-over-par 73.
Utah improved its opening round by seven strokes compared to last year’s even-par start when they went on to win the event. The leaderboard after one round shows Georgia Southern leading at -10, followed by Utah and Yale at -7 each.
