The Utah football team began its first set of spring workouts under new head coach Morgan Scalley, with both returning players and newcomers participating together, according to an April 1 announcement. The Utes are scheduled for 15 spring practices at the Spence & Cleone Eccles Football Center and Rice-Eccles Stadium.
This period marks a significant transition for the program as it adapts to changes in leadership and prepares for the upcoming season. The focus during these sessions is on player development, team cohesion, and implementing a new offensive system.
Scalley said he is pleased with how the team has performed through their first seven workouts. “I’m excited with the progress,” Scalley said. “You’re seeing the offensive line continue to make strides. I think the offense maybe got a little bit better of the defense in some of the scrimmage work we did on Saturday. It was good to see the defense bounce back. As long as it’s back and forth and not one side dominating the other, that’s what you’re wanting to see is competitive football and the culture continues to be a strong emphasis.”
Discussing how players are adapting to changes on offense, Scalley said: “When you’re talking alignment, assignment, technique that’s the progress,” Scalley said. “Align correctly, align with speed, what’s my assignment and master technique. Then after that it’s reps, reps, reps. Building a skill takes time and effort. We’ve been getting ready for this through winter workouts and coach (Kevin) McGiven and staff has done a great job.” He also highlighted how new additions have integrated into team culture: “Awesome, and it’s because the guys in the program are bringing them along,” Scalley said.
As Utah continues its spring schedule leading up to next season’s kickoff, coaches will keep emphasizing teamwork and preparation while evaluating player performance throughout remaining practices.
