The Utah baseball team lost to Arizona 8-6 in extra innings on March 13 at Charlie Monfort Field at America First Ballpark. The game saw Utah take an early lead, but Arizona rallied late to secure the win.
This matchup was significant as both teams battled through a close contest that extended into the eleventh inning, showing resilience and competitive play from both sides.
Utah’s offense produced nine hits, with six different players contributing. Cal Miller and Jet Gilliam each had two hits, while Miller also recorded an RBI and a run scored. Luke Jacobs gave Utah an early advantage with a first-inning home run. Cameron Gurney added an RBI single and scored once during the game. On the mound, Colter McAnelly started for Utah, pitching seven innings and allowing just two runs on one hit while striking out six batters.
The Utes built a 6-1 lead by the sixth inning after scoring four runs in that frame. However, Arizona began their comeback with a solo home run in the sixth and continued to chip away at Utah’s lead. In the ninth inning, Caleb Danzeisen of Arizona hit a three-run homer to tie the game at 6-6. The Wildcats then took their first lead in the eleventh inning after capitalizing on a wild pitch and adding another run with a sacrifice fly.
Arizona reliever Garrett Hicks closed out the game by pitching three scoreless innings without allowing any hits and striking out three batters. Despite McAnelly’s strong performance for Utah, Arizona finished with eight runs on six hits compared to Utah’s nine hits.
Looking ahead, Utah will face Arizona again on Saturday for the second game of their three-game series at America First Ballpark.
