Senior Kathryn Grant and sophomore Callie Eaglestone represented the University of Utah women’s diving team on March 19 at the NCAA Division I Women’s National Championships, held at the McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta.
The event is significant as it showcases top collegiate athletes from across the country, with both Grant and Eaglestone competing against a strong national field. Their performances reflect the continued presence of Utah’s program at this high level of competition.
Grant finished in 32nd place on the one-meter springboard, averaging 41.46 points per dive for a total score of 248.75. She had previously placed 22nd in this event at last year’s championships. “Kathryn had a steady performance and her final score didn’t reflect how well she dived because the judging was extraordinarily tight today,” head diving coach Richard Marschner said. “If this was March Madness, she would be moving on to the next round as one of the 32 best divers in the country. She’s got two more events and I think we have an opportunity to improve each day.”
Eaglestone, who competed on the one-meter board for her second consecutive year, placed 48th with a total score of 218.55. Marschner said, “Callie capped off an incredible season for herself today and I am so proud to be her coach. Today didn’t go exactly as planned but she can hold her head high and she’ll forever be the first woman in school history to be an NCAA Zone champion.”
Looking ahead, Grant is scheduled to compete in preliminaries on the three-meter springboard on Friday, March 20.
