The University of Utah softball team defeated the No. 19/20 Arizona Wildcats 10-2 on May 3, securing a series win and clinching a place in the upcoming Big 12 Tournament. The game took place at Dumke Family Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City.
This victory brings Utah’s overall record to 35-19-1 and their conference record to 10-13-1. As a result, the Utes have earned the seventh seed for the Big 12 Tournament and are set to face Oklahoma State in the first round on Thursday at Devon Park in Oklahoma City.
“That was a sweet ending to the regular season,” said coach Amy Hogue. “That is a tough Arizona team that we just took the series from. I’m proud of what this group has accomplished throughout the year and look forward to being on a roll going into the Big 12 tournament.”
Utah started strong with Kennedy Proctor hitting a two-run home run in the first inning, followed by another two-run homer from Shonty Passi in the third inning. Pitcher Hailey Maestretti held Arizona scoreless for five innings, allowing only five hits over six innings with four strikeouts and no walks. Maestretti became the first Ute since Mariah Lopez in May 2024 to earn consecutive wins over ranked teams.
Additional runs came from another home run by Proctor, doubles by Passi, sacrifice flies by Kate Blunt and Hailee White, and Brooke Tacke’s walk-off single that ended the game via run rule—Utah’s first such win over a ranked opponent since defeating UCLA on May 1, 2022.
Looking ahead, Utah will compete next week as part of their postseason journey.
