The University of Utah softball team lost to the No. 19/20 Arizona Wildcats, 6-1, in a Big 12 Conference game at Dumke Family Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City on May 1. Mia Gomez led Utah with two hits and reached base three times during the contest.
This result brings Utah’s record to 33-19-1 overall and 8-13-1 in conference play for the season. Despite the loss, Utah remains in position for the eighth and final spot in the upcoming Big 12 Tournament, staying half a game ahead of Iowa State after their defeat to UCF.
Arizona scored early with two runs in the first inning through a combination of walks, singles, and a sacrifice fly. The Wildcats added two more runs in the third inning due to additional hits and errors from Utah’s defense. A triple followed by another error increased Arizona’s lead to five runs by the fourth inning before they added an unearned run in the fifth.
Raci Miranda pitched for Utah starting in the sixth inning and delivered two scoreless frames without allowing a hit or walk. Offensively, Utah managed to get runners on base throughout much of the game but struggled to convert those opportunities into runs until late.
In their final chance during the seventh inning, Utah loaded the bases with two singles and a walk. Danika Wilson drew a walk that brought home their only run before Shonty Passi’s deep fly was caught by Regan Shockey for Arizona’s final out.
Gomez finished with two hits including a double while Kennedy Proctor reached base twice via hit and walk. Passi recorded her ninth double of this season and Cian Noli drew two walks.
Utah is scheduled to face Arizona again at noon on Saturday.
