The Utah baseball team lost to Kansas 14-9 at Hoglund Ballpark, as announced on April 3. Utah managed to score eight unanswered runs late in the game but could not overcome a large deficit.
This matchup is significant for both teams as it was part of a three-game series, with the final game scheduled for Saturday and moved up to an 11 a.m. Mountain Time start.
Kansas took control of the game with six runs in the fourth inning and five more in the fifth, building a lead that proved too much for Utah. The Utes trailed by as many as eleven runs before closing the gap to three. Daniel Arambula contributed two hits and scored three times, including hitting his second home run of the season. Cameron Gurney and Blake Eckerle also had two hits each, while Jake Long, Jet Gilliam, and Eckerle drove in two runs apiece.
Payton Riske started on the mound for Utah and worked out of trouble early but was unable to hold back Kansas’ offense during their big innings. Landon Salvesen provided relief with a scoreless sixth inning that helped keep Utah within reach.
Utah’s offense rallied with four runs in the sixth inning thanks to contributions from Cal Miller, Gilliam, and Eckerle. Additional scoring came in later innings from Gurney’s single and Long’s double that brought Utah closer before Kansas added insurance runs in their half of the eighth inning.
The teams will conclude their series on Saturday morning. Fans can follow updates through @utahbaseball or by visiting www.UtahUtes.com.
