The University of Utah baseball team recorded a 16-9 victory over Utah Tech on May 12, with the game taking place at Charlie Monfort Field at America First Ballpark. The Utes collected a total of 21 hits and secured the win by pulling away late with a four-run eighth inning.
The game was highlighted by leadoff batter Luke Jacobs, who went 5-for-6 with two doubles, a home run, five RBIs, and two runs scored. Jacobs finished just a triple short of hitting for the cycle. Cameron Gurney and Matt Flaharty each contributed doubles while Jake Long, Gurney, and Flaharty all hit home runs for Utah. Flaharty also set a season-high with four RBIs.
Eight different players from Utah had multi-hit games at the plate. This marked Jacobs’ first five-hit game as a member of the Utes and was the third such performance by any Utah player this season. Cal Miller extended his on-base streak to 24 consecutive games—the longest by a Utah freshman since 2011—by going 2-for-4 and scoring once.
On the mound, eight pitchers took part for Utah in what was described as a staff day. Ryan Kittredge earned his first win after starting with two innings pitched, while Justin Abercrombie received credit for the save after retiring all four batters he faced to close out the contest.
Utah built an early lead by batting around in the first inning to score seven runs on six hits and led 10-0 after two frames. The Trailblazers narrowed that gap to just two runs by the top of the seventh but were unable to complete their comeback attempt as Jacobs’ three-run homer in the eighth helped seal victory for Utah.
Looking ahead, Utah will finish its regular season with a three-game series against Baylor from May 14 through May 16 at America First Ballpark. Special events are planned during this stretch including Family Night on Friday featuring a pregame Little League parade and postgame drone show; Little League teams can sign up until Wednesday evening. Senior Day celebrations are scheduled for Saturday.
