Utah Baseball lost to Texas Christian University by a score of 3-0 in the teams’ series opener at Lupton Stadium on May 8.
The result marks a setback for Utah (24-20, 11-14 Big 12) as they seek to improve their standing late in the season. The team was unable to capitalize on several opportunities with runners in scoring position during the early innings.
Starting pitcher Colter McAnelly delivered six innings, allowing three runs and striking out four batters. This outing brought McAnelly’s career strikeout total to 200, making him the fifth pitcher in recorded Utah history to reach this milestone and the first since Jayson Rose achieved a program-record of 256 strikeouts from 2015 through 2017. Dylan Gazaway followed with two shutout innings, recording two strikeouts and allowing two hits without any walks.
Offensively, Cal Miller singled and walked three times, extending his on-base streak to 21 consecutive games—the longest active streak on the team. Cameron Gurney contributed with his ninth double of the season. Despite these efforts, Utah could not produce a run against TCU pitching.
TCU broke through in the fourth inning when Sawyer Strosnider led off with a triple down the right field line and scored on a wild pitch. The Frogs added two more runs in the fifth inning after putting runners at second and third base before hitting a single through the left side.
Utah will attempt to even up the series against TCU when both teams return for game two at Lupton Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
