The Utah baseball team lost to Kansas by a score of 13-9 on Saturday, Apr. 4, after overcoming a six-run deficit but ultimately falling short at Hoglund Ballpark in Lawrence.
The game was marked by Utah’s resilience as the team trailed 7-1 after three innings before mounting a comeback to tie the game at seven. The Utes’ offense saw every starting player record a hit by the fourth inning, including eight extra-base hits—six doubles and two home runs. Notable performances included Matt Flaharty and Cal Miller each hitting two doubles, while Luke Jacobs and Nevan Noonan contributed home runs.
In the fourth inning, Jet Gilliam and Flaharty started with back-to-back doubles. Miller added another double later in the inning, followed by Jack Kleveno’s single that brought Miller home. Jacobs then hit a two-run homer to cut the deficit further, and Gilliam tied it up with his second hit of the inning after video review confirmed he beat out a play at first base.
Dylan Gazaway entered as relief pitcher for Utah in the bottom of the fourth and kept Kansas from scoring that frame. In the fifth inning, Miller doubled again before Jake Long was hit by a pitch with bases loaded to give Utah its first lead at 8-7. However, despite adding another run in the seventh, defensive errors contributed to Kansas scoring four times that inning and pulling ahead for good.
Flaharty managed one more ground-rule double in the eighth but Utah could not close the gap further as Kansas secured victory.
Looking ahead, Utah is scheduled to play against Utah Tech on Tuesday in St. George with first pitch set for 4 p.m.
