The Utah baseball team defeated Washington State 8-5 on March 17 at Charlie Monfort Field at America First Ballpark.
The game was marked by a strong offensive performance from Utah, with the top four hitters—Luke Jacobs, Jake Long, Daniel Arambula, and Cameron Gurney—each collecting two hits. Gurney reached his 100th career hit for Utah and drove in two runs, while Jacobs scored three times during the game.
Long extended his hitting streak to 13 games, and both Gurney and Arambula now have double-digit run totals for the season. Jacobs contributed with a triple and a ground-rule double. The team went six-for-thirteen with runners in scoring position.
On the mound, Demitri Diamant earned the win in relief by allowing just one hit over 1.2 scoreless innings. David Galindo secured his first save as a Utah Ute with a scoreless ninth inning. The game saw several lead changes before Utah took control with a four-run fifth inning highlighted by RBI hits from Arambula, Gurney, and Matt Flaharty.
Defensively, Jacobs made an outfield assist in the seventh inning that helped prevent an inside-the-park home run by Washington State’s Matt Priest. The play involved relay throws from Jacobs to Cal Miller to catcher Derek Smith for the tag at home plate.
Looking ahead, Utah will travel to face the Cincinnati Bearcats for a three-game Big 12 Conference series starting Friday at 4 p.m. Mountain Time.
