The Utah baseball team defeated the Arizona Wildcats 7-6 in extra innings on March 14 at Charlie Monfort Field at America First Ballpark.
The game was marked by an early offensive surge from Utah, which scored four runs in the first inning. Jake Long started the scoring with a single to center field, bringing Luke Jacobs home. Cameron Gurney followed with a double that scored Long, and Cal Miller hit his first college home run to extend the lead to 4-0.
Arizona responded in the second inning with three runs, narrowing Utah’s lead to one. Junior pitcher Payton Riske managed to end the rally with a strikeout. The Utes added another run in the fifth when Jet Gilliam scored on a sacrifice fly from Jacobs, making it 5-3.
Arizona tied the game in the ninth inning after Roman Meyers singled to bring TJ Adams home. In extra innings, Arizona took a brief lead before Utah tied it again on a Gurney single. A wild pitch advanced Gurney to third base, and Zakye Hawkins hit a grounder that allowed Gurney to score the winning run after an error by Arizona’s third baseman.
Gurney led Utah with three hits and two RBIs, while Miller also had two RBIs from his first-inning homer. Gilliam recorded two stolen bases during the game.
