U.S. Senator John Curtis (R-Utah) has announced his opposition to the nomination of Jeremy Carl for Assistant Secretary of State for International Organizations. The announcement follows a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing in which Curtis expressed concerns about Carl’s previous statements regarding Israel and the Jewish community.
“After reviewing his record and participating in today’s hearing, I do not believe that Jeremy Carl is the right person to represent our nation’s best interests in international forums, and I find his anti-Israel views and insensitive remarks about the Jewish people unbecoming of the position for which he has been nominated,” Curtis said.
During the hearing, Curtis questioned Carl on comments made during an October 2024 podcast, where Carl stated that “the United States spends too much time and energy on Israel, often to the detriment of our own national interests.” Curtis pressed Carl to specify how U.S. support for Israel might have harmed American interests.
Carl responded by acknowledging the importance of supporting Israel at the United Nations. “I think diplomatic support of Israel in the UN context is absolutely critical,” he said.
Curtis also raised concerns about remarks made by a podcast host regarding Holocaust victimhood and Israeli actions toward Palestinians. When asked why he did not challenge those statements during the podcast, Carl replied, “I would have to review the podcasting question that you mentioned. I would have to review the podcast in question—I do a lot of podcasts that I’m not familiar with.”
Curtis concluded by stating: “You have not been nominated to some random position, to a post where you get a second chance on these issues. But you’re the principal manager of the U.S. multilateral policy. Anti-Israel bias in international organizations is part of—and you know this—is a broader strategy to undermine the United States and our legitimacy.”
