Mia Gomez was named Softball on SI’s Freshman of the Week on March 10 after a strong performance at the plate, and the University of Utah softball team was recognized as Team of the Week by the same publication for sweeping then-No. 21/22 Arizona State.
The recognition highlights both individual and team achievements during a successful week for Utah softball. These awards bring attention to standout performances and significant milestones reached by both Gomez and her teammates.
Gomez had a notable week, going 5-for-12 with three home runs and six runs batted in. She began her streak against Southern Utah with a home run and two runs scored, continued with another homer and three RBIs in the middle game against Arizona State, and hit her third home run leading off the series finale. Her slugging percentage for the week was 1.167, and she extended her on-base streak to 26 games, which is currently the longest among freshmen nationwide.
Utah’s Team of the Week award followed a four-game winning streak that included scoring 18 runs and hitting five home runs in one game against Southern Utah. The sweep over Arizona State marked their first sweep of a ranked opponent since 2023, while their total of 35 runs in three games was their highest output in such a series since 1996.
This marks Gomez’s second freshman weekly honor this year; she previously received Big 12 Freshman of the Week recognition on February 17.
