Mia Gomez set a new program record by reaching base in her 34th consecutive game as the University of Utah softball team lost 2-1 to No. 21 Oklahoma State on March 27 at Dumke Family Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City.
The result leaves Utah with a season record of 25-9 and a conference mark of 4-3 in Big 12 play. The game was marked by strong pitching performances from both teams, but the Utes were unable to overcome an early deficit.
Gomez, who has reached base safely in every collegiate game so far, broke the previous school record held by Abby Dayton. She secured the new milestone with a single into right-center during her final at-bat in the seventh inning. The streak is also currently the longest active mark for any freshman nationwide.
Utah pitcher Hailey Maestretti delivered seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits and recording three strikeouts. Both teams were scoreless through two innings before Oklahoma State’s Amanda Hasler hit a two-run single in the third. Utah responded with singles from Hailee White, Kennedy Proctor, and Kayla Lyon—the latter bringing home White for their only run.
Despite several late scoring opportunities—including runners on first and second with two outs in the seventh—Utah could not tie the game as Ruby Meylan struck out their final batter. The teams are scheduled for a rematch on Saturday at Dumke Family Softball Stadium.
