University of Utah director of skiing Fredrik Landstedt has been named Coach of the Year by the Utah Sports Commission, announced on March 30. Landstedt will be recognized at the Governor’s State of Sport Awards in April.
This recognition highlights Landstedt’s impact on collegiate skiing since joining the University of Utah in July 2018. Under his leadership, the Utah Ski Team has secured six NCAA Championships over seven years and finished as national runner-up once. The team was previously honored as Team of the Year at the same awards event in 2023.
Landstedt’s tenure includes a period where no other program in NCAA mixed-gender skiing matched Utah’s success, including four consecutive team titles from 2019 to 2023. During this time, Utah skiers earned a nation-leading 108 NCAA All-America awards and won 16 individual NCAA championships.
Recent championship victories have required overcoming significant challenges. In both the 2025 and 2026 seasons, the Utes had to rally from behind to secure their titles, with notable performances from athletes such as Johs Braathen Herland and Mons Melbye. The team also faced injuries and illness throughout these seasons but managed to achieve top results.
Beyond athletic achievements, student-athletes under Landstedt have excelled academically with eight Academic All-America honors since his arrival. Both men’s and women’s teams achieved a perfect Graduation Success Rate for the academic year 2023-24 according to NCAA metrics.
The award underscores both competitive excellence and academic commitment within University of Utah’s ski program under Landstedt’s direction.
