Cost of college increased for all University of Utah students during 2022-23 school year

The University of Utah reported a 4.7% rise in in-state tuition fees for the 2022-23 academic year, based on the latest available figures, according to the latest disclosure from the National Center for Education Statistics.

Utah residents paid $9,315 to attend the public four-year university this year, marking an increase of $422 from the $8,893 charged in the 2021-22 academic year.

Non-resident students were charged $29,837 for the 2022-23 year, which is 220.3% higher than the in-state rate. This amount reflects a 5.3% increase from $28,345 in the previous academic year.

Approximately 57% of the university’s undergraduate students are Utah residents, while about 36% come from other states and 7% are international students.

Data indicates that 79% of full-time undergraduates who enrolled in 2022-23 received some form of financial aid. A total of 3,872 students were awarded grants or scholarships amounting to $47 million, and 1,120 students secured loans exceeding $8.9 million.

Across all undergraduate students, 15,813 received grants or scholarships totaling $163.1 million. Additionally, 5,667 students obtained federal student loans totaling $35.9 million.

Undergraduate education costs have seen a significant increase over the past few decades. Data shows a 169% rise in the average total cost, including tuition, fees, room, and board, between 1980 and 2020.

According to a 2023 College Board report, in-state students at public universities paid an average of $11,260, while out-of-state students paid $29,150 in the 2023-24 academic year.

Meanwhile, student loan debt has steadily increased over the last 30 years, reaching $1.75 trillion in 2024, averaging a total of $28,950 per borrower. Federal loans make up 92% of the debt, with over half of students at both public and private four-year colleges graduating with student loans.
