Cheryl K. Acton, a member of the Utah House of Representatives, shared several opinions and observations on state policy and media in recent social media posts.
On December 30, 2025, Acton addressed fiscal oversight in Utah, stating, “I like this idea. Utah does keep a check on agency spending thru the Accountable Budget process, which requires periods of close scrutiny for each recipient, but I’m sure we cld tighten controls w/more audits of any NGOs who receive state resources.” The Accountable Budget Process is a system used by Utah to periodically review government agency budgets and ensure financial accountability.
In another post dated January 2, 2026, Acton commented on the local media landscape: “The fact that both newspapers of record in Utah won’t publish this analysis compels me to share it. This is why independent journalism is flourishing everywhere while traditional media is withering away.” Her remarks reflect broader trends in U.S. news consumption where digital and independent outlets have grown as print newspapers face declining readership and revenue.
Later the same day, Acton discussed political philosophy: “Rugged individualism = FREEDOM, which is our birthright. Let’s not sell it for a mess of pottage. I have to wonder if anyone who favors collectivism has ever had to make a group decision that is disadvantageous to his own interests?” The concept of “rugged individualism” has been prominent in American political thought since the early twentieth century and often contrasts with collectivist ideologies.
Utah’s Accountable Budget Process involves periodic legislative reviews intended to promote transparency and efficient use of taxpayer funds. In recent years, debates over nonprofit oversight and calls for increased auditing have surfaced as states look to ensure public resources are managed responsibly.
